On March 26th, on a Friday afternoon, the San Fransisco 49ers, and the Miami Dolphins pulled off a stunning trade, that had the NFL world shocked. The 49ers traded the 12th pick in the draft alongside two more first-round picks, and a 3rd round draft pick, to trade all the way up to the 3rd pick in the draft.
So, what does this mean for both teams?
For the Dolphins, they traded all the way down to the 12 pick, and in a separate trade (with the Eagles) went back up to the 6th pick. Basically, they gained a lot of extra compensation and moved down only 3 spots. This gives them multiple first-round draft picks in the next couple of years and with the coach and the GM they have, it sets them up fantastically well for the future. They now can still pick any receiver that they might want and could get their expected-to-be franchise QB, Tua Tagovailoa some weapons to help him out.
The Dolphins GM since taking over has made some fantastic moves and has now received a lot of draft capital. Combine this with how good Brian Flores has been the last two years, and the fact they might have their franchise signal-caller, one can only assume they will become a force in the league, sooner than later.
For the 49ers, this is even bigger implications for the rest of the NFL. The 49ers have one of the most talented rosters in the league, and to the eyes of many, the one thing that was holding them back was their polarizing QB in Jimmy Garropolo. This team is now 1 year removed from making the SB, and coming close to winning it, and now the organization clearly thought they needed to make a big change. With this move, they have put themselves in a fantastic position to draft a potential franchise QB in Justin Fields, Zach Wilson, or Trey Lance.
Their roster is already a Superbowl contender, and they have weapons everywhere. Their receiving duo of Deebo Samuel and Brandon Aiyuk have flashed an incredible amount of potential in their rookie seasons, and George Kittle is widely regarded as a top-two Tight End, if not the best. Add on that with the speedy running back in Raheem Mostert, and Trent Williams, almost unanimously regarded as the best Left Tackle in the entire league. Icing on the cake is innovative play-caller, Kyle Shanahan, who is also regarded as one of the best play-callers in the league.
Niners bring back Nick Bosa from injury, star LB Fred Warner, and nearly all of their defense from last season as well. The 49ers would be an ideal landing spot for any rookie QB in the league, and it provides them a chance to get a franchise signal-caller. If they do manage to get a franchise QB, Kyle Shanahan could be set with his franchise QB for the next 20 years.
It was an all-in, gutsy move for the 49ers, and they showed to the NFL, that they have a roster that they believe is great enough to compete right now, and they have gone all-in on getting their QB for the future. Time will tell how this trade plays out.
